Fighting the Good Fight

Have you ever fought with your brother or sister? Maybe they took something that belonged to you and broke it. Or maybe they beat you at a game and you got angry. Or maybe they were annoying when your friends came over. I used to tell my kids that their brothers and sister are the people they will know for the longest part of their lives and they should work at getting along.

When we fight with one another we often use angry words. Sometimes those words lead us to use weapons (our fists or even worse a sword or a gun!) Did you know that God has given us a good sword for fighting? It’s the Sword of the Spirit– what we also call the Bible.

The Bible is full of “weapons” to help us fight the good fight!

Luke 6:27-28 “But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.”

Galatians 5:26 “Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.”

Proverbs 15:1 “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

1 John 4:11 “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”

It is not easy to always get along with our brother or our sister or our friends or our neighbors. But God gives us lots of reminders in His Word about how we are to do work at getting along. I pray that these are the “weapons” you will use when you are tempted to be disagreeable with another person.

Matthew 5:9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”
